I believe The Art of War by Sun Tzu is still required reading at our military academies so why is it the United States has forgotten how to fight a war to win. Not since WWII have we actually tried to defeat our enemies. The only way to win the peace is to beat your enemy so badly that they loose their will to fight. When Sherman lead his march, when Grant took Richmond, when we dropped bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki we were actually trying to win and it worked. We saw shock and awe on Bagdad and there were people driving their cars up and down the streets the next day. Strategic strikes with little collateral damage do little to win the peace. I hear all the time were not at war with the Iraqi people but with Sadam. Were we at war with the German people when we carpet bombed half of Europe? Were we at war with the Japanese people when we dropped atomic bombs on their cities? I think not but the Japanese didn't even field an army for the next sixty years so I think that worked. We WON! Until we elect someone with the guts to do what is politically incorrect and actually fight a war to win then we are setting ourselves up for more failure like Korea, Viet Nam, and Gulf War I.
We can't even win the war on drugs, the war on illegal immigration, the war on poverty all because we never actually fight to win.
